In collaboration with the USF Racial Justice Initiative and Tampa Bay Housing Authority, The Tampa Bay History Center will honor the perseverance and accomplishments of Tampa’s Black Pioneers. On May 6, 2025, Tampa will be celebrating the emancipation of its formerly enslaved population on May 6, 1864. In honor of the legacy of the emancipated ancestors and their commitment to educating themselves and their families, Ashley Morrow, of Tampa Black Historians, has compiled an information sheet about Tampa's historically black schools and provided some ideas for learning activities for families, teachers, and students to engage these stories of African American resilience during and after the U.S. Civil War.
